  • WHAT IS NBS HUB PORTUGAL

    NBS HUB Portugal is a national platform dedicated to advancing Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) as a strategic pathway for sustainable territorial development. Created within the framework of the European NetworkNature initiative, the HUB connects researchers, municipalities, public institutions, companies, civil society organisations, and citizens committed to integrating nature into innovation, governance, and everyday life.

    The HUB operates as a collaborative ecosystem that fosters dialogue, knowledge exchange, and applied practice. It promotes the protection, regeneration, and sustainable management of ecosystems while supporting climate resilience, biodiversity enhancement, water and food security, and healthier urban environments.

    By bridging science, policy, design, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement, NBS HUB Portugal strengthens national capacity to develop, implement, and scale high-impact nature-based solutions aligned with European and global sustainability agendas.

    Decorreu no Museu de Portimão de 26 a 28 de janeiro de 2023 e contou com o apoio da NetworkNature da Comissão Europeia, da CM Portimão e do ISMAT, através dos docentes Américo Mateus, Susana Leonor e Gabriel Patrocínio. Estiveram presentes 40 especialistas mundiais de Soluções Baseadas da Natureza (NBS), de países como Portugal, Espanha, Estados Unidos, Alemanha, Itália, Bélgica, Suécia, Ilhas Faroe, entre outros. Founding EU Projects

URBiNAT is a six-year European project (2018–2024), funded under the EU Horizon 2020 Programme, dedicated to the regeneration of under-served urban neighbourhoods through the co-creation and implementation of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). The project develops integrated “Healthy Corridors” — interconnected ecological and social interventions that act as catalysts for urban transformation. By combining environmental restoration with community engagement and participatory design processes, URBiNAT strengthens social cohesion, improves living conditions in social housing areas, and enhances the overall wellbeing and resilience of residents.

Founding EU Projects

TRANS-lighthouses is a European initiative focused on understanding the strengths and limitations involved in designing and implementing Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). The project seeks to rethink and reframe the governance, design, and systemic complexity required to create socially and ecologically just solutions. It establishes a network of “lighthouses” across urban, rural, coastal, and forest territories — symbolic hubs representing innovative governance arrangements and collaborative instruments. Through multi-stakeholder networks and coordinated local action, TRANS-lighthouses advances inclusive, place-based approaches to scaling NBS impact.
